How we clear a soil boring for underground utilities

There is always the risk of damaging underground utilities, especially when you are drilling for samples or installing wells. The most expensive utility damages often occur in the least likely locations. This makes employing the use of underground utility locating services critical to your project’s success.

Utility Locator, LLC clears soil boring and well locations to ensure that the location is absent of underground utilities. We do this utilizing a variety of electromagnetic equipment, in addition to a ground penetrating radar option.

Our Utility Locating Process

Our first step to clear a soil boring or well location for underground utilities with our electromagnetic equipment is to connect to any know utilities are within close proximity (100 LF +/-) of the location. This includes connecting to near-by fire hydrants, gas valves or meters, electrical conduits or pole drops, telephone boxes and pedestals, street lamps, etc. We will verify that the utility we have connected to does not enter the work area.

Our next step is to try and identify any other utilities that may not be evident with visible surface features. We do this by performing a series of inductive sweeps. First, we will attempt an inductive locate by placing our transmitter box in the location of the excavation. We will then rotate the transmitter 360° as we walk a circumference perimeter around the excavation location with our receiver unit. We will also repeat this process using a few different grid patterns to confirm the presence or absence of underground metallic utilities in the work area.

Next, we will perform a grid search pattern with a split-box device. This device works like most inductive electromagnetic locators, except that the unit may be operated with ease by a single technician. The transmitter and receiver are attached to a pole, which allows the technician to navigate the site with the instrument to positively identify any underground and metallic objects such as pipes, cables, or manhole structures.

Ground Penetrating Radar

Ground Penetrating Radar CompanyIf elected, we will then conduct a similar grid pattern survey using ground penetrating radar. This device (GPR for short), will allow the locating technician to scan or survey the sol boring or well location of any underground anomalies. The GPR works by identifying the difference in conductive properties of the subsurface materials it has scanned. It has the capability to find both metallic and non-metallic objects. GPR works great to help identify the location of underground plastic and concrete, and can even be used to confirm the presence or absence of underground storage tanks (UST).
